E-commerce Seller Fees Guide (India)
Selling online in India involves complex fee structures that differ drastically between platforms. A product that is highly profitable on one platform might cause a loss on another due to category commissions and weight-based shipping tiers.
Types of Marketplace Fees
- Referral Fee (Commission): A percentage of the sales price. Amazon and Flipkart charge 5% to 25% depending on the category. Meesho generally charges 0% for most standard products.
- Fixed/Closing Fee: A flat fee charged per order based on the item's price bracket. Usually ranges from ₹5 to ₹60.
- Shipping/Weight Handling: Charged based on volumetric weight or actual weight (whichever is higher), separated into Local, Zonal, and National tiers.
- Service GST: The government mandates an 18% GST on all the fees mentioned above (since they are services provided by the marketplace to you).
Important Considerations
While Meesho shows higher profit margins due to 0% commission, sellers often experience higher Return to Origin (RTO) and customer return rates compared to Amazon FBA or Flipkart Assured. Always factor in an expected return rate (typically 10-25%) when setting your final selling price.
