Tip & Bill Splitter
Leaving a tip shouldn’t require mental math at the table. This tip calculator helps with everyday dining: add an optional tax line, choose a tip percent, and split the check evenly or by shares so everyone pays a fair amount and the cents still add up.
Last reviewed July 30, 2026.
When to use this
- Splitting a restaurant check with friends after dinner
- Figuring delivery or takeout tip before you confirm the order
- Deciding between 18%, 20%, or 22% without pulling out a spreadsheet
Worked example
Bill $86.50, tax $6.92, tip 20% on the pre-tax bill, 3 people. Tip = $17.30. Total with tax = $110.72. Even split ≈ $36.91 each. If one person covered an appetizer and you use shares 2,1,1, the first person pays about twice what each of the others pay, with cents adjusted so the three amounts equal $110.72 exactly.
Common mistakes
- Tipping on the post-tax total by accident when your group prefers pre-tax tipping
- Forgetting tax entirely, then discovering the card charge is higher than expected
- Splitting uneven orders “in your head” and leaving someone short a few dollars
How it works
By default, tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100). Tax is added on top and is not included in the tip base unless you enable “Tip on bill + tax.” For uneven splits, each person’s share is (their share ÷ total shares) × grand total, and the last person receives any leftover cents so the parts sum exactly.
How to use
- Enter the pre-tax bill and optional tax amount.
- Pick a tip percent (15–25% are common presets) or type your own.
- Set the number of people, or enter shares like 2,1,1 for an uneven split.
- Pay using the tip, total, and per-person amounts shown.

FAQ
Is tip calculated before or after tax in the US?
Both happen. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Some venues and apps tip on the total after tax. This tool defaults to pre-tax and lets you switch.
What tip percent should I leave?
For sit-down service, 15–20% is a common range for standard service and 20–25% for excellent service. Delivery, coffee counters, and buffets often follow different customs.
How does uneven split work?
Enter comma-separated shares such as 2,1,1. We allocate the grand total by those weights and adjust the last person’s amount so every cent is accounted for.
Does this store my bill information?
No. Calculations run in your browser. Nothing from the form is uploaded to our servers.
Should I tip on takeout?
Customs vary. Some people tip a smaller percent for counter pickup; others tip for complex orders. Use whatever percent matches your situation.
